Connecticut Asbestos Sites

Many of these companies have been in place for decades and are - or were - housed in buildings where asbestos was liberally deployed as insulation for processing equipment, as flooring, perhaps even as the woven cloth for protective clothing in areas where extreme heat was a jobsite hazard. Unfortunately the asbestos was as hazardous as the heat. Connecticut is also home to the United States submarine fleet or much of it and has had shipyards in place for decades that repair Navy vessels alongside commercial freighters. The Navy and civilian shipyards have been prime locations for asbestos exposure, as it was used throughout ships built before 1980 as insulation in engine rooms and on piping systems throughout the vessels.  Crewing or servicing one of these vessels was hazardous due to the constant asbestos exposure.

Mortality Due to Asbestos in Connecticut

In 2004 a study was released that analyzed the asbestos-related deaths recorded across the country during the twenty year period between 1979 and 2000. During that period Connecticut reported 249 deaths due to asbestosis. For the same period the state recorded deaths attributable to mesothelioma somewhere between 249 and 411 occurrences. 

In 1999 the federal government began tracking mesothelioma deaths specifically due to the tens of thousands of people who had come forward claiming health problems due to asbestos exposure. During the period between 1999 and the end of 2004 Connecticut reported 211 deaths caused by mesothelioma cancer. The disease is still with us, despite the asbestos cleanups that have swept through older industrial facilities and commercial buildings. It is expected to continue to rise due to the uncommon lag time between asbestos exposure and the appearance of symptoms related to mesothelioma.
