Asbestos Related Deaths in Kentucky

According to a study of death statistics conducted for the period 1979 to 2001 there were 118 deaths as a result of asbestosis.  This disease is treatable and is not a form of mesothelioma cancer. Mesothelioma, which is a lethal form of cancer, was cited in 316 deaths of Kentucky residents during that period. However the federal government did not start tracking mesothelioma deaths specifically until 1999.  Between that year and the end of 2004 there were 169 confirmed mesothelioma deaths.

It is generally believed that mesothelioma deaths as a result of workplace exposure have reached a plateau; however comparing a five year period of confirmed results with a twenty year report that may only be partial, it seems the disease is still on the rise. In any case, tens of thousands of Americans have been affected and have filed liability claims against asbestos manufacturers and employers who used asbestos products.
