New Hampshire Asbestos & Mesothelioma

Asbestos in New Hampshire

New Hampshire is another New England state full of the remnants of the nineteenth century industrial age in the form of riverside mills.  Representing the industrialization from the twentieth century are a number of power houses that are operated on steam power and used asbestos as insulation and as fire retardant for decades.

The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is another asbestos hotspot, just as all shipyards are.  Both commercial vessels and Navy ships built before 1980 used asbestos extensively in engine rooms and in other areas of the vessel that needed insulation or fire retardant material. Not only the crew of those ships but also the tradesmen who repaired and maintained the ships in port were constantly exposed to asbestos, in various states of “friabilityâ€? – the tendency to crumble.  Crumbling asbestos releases dust into the air that contains the asbestos fibers which create so many health problems for humans.

Naval shipyard workers faced asbestos exposure daily.  So did power plant maintenance teams, mill workers and employees of insulation companies as well as piping and heating companies.  New Hampshire has its share of those, and only in the last twenty to thirty years has insulation in homes and buildings been converted from asbestos to fiberglass.

Listed below are jobsites in New Hampshire that could have exposed employees to asbestos on a daily basis.  If you or a relative were once employed at one of these locations, it is worthwhile to speak with a doctor about the dangers of asbestos exposure.  If you are suffering from an asbestos-related disease you need to consult with an experienced attorney about the compensation that you may be entitled to from trust funds set up by asbestos companies to pay off the hundreds of millions of dollars in claims from people who have lost their health to asbestos.

Deaths from Asbestos Exposure in New Hampshire

According to a survey of death certificates filed between 1979 and 2000, New Hampshire lost between 231 and 314 residents to an asbestos related disease.   Those could have been asbestosis, a permanent scarring of the lungs that reduces breathing capacity, or it could have been mesothelioma cancer.  This lethal form of cancer is caused by inhaled asbestos fibers embedding themselves in the lining of the lungs and ultimately causing the uncontrolled growth of cancerous cells.

The federal government began tracking deaths from malignant mesothelioma in 1999. From that time through 2004 there were 86 deaths from mesothelioma in New Hampshire.  It is clear that deaths from asbestos related diseases have not subsided despite the fact that asbestos products were taken off the market almost completely by the mid-1980s.
