Mesothelioma: 12 Essential Facts

Oklahoma Asbestos Areas

There are certain industries that are associated with a high probability of hazardous asbestos exposure; power plants, oil refineries, chemical companies and paper mills are among them. The oil discoveries in Oklahoma led to the construction of a multitude of oil processing facilities through the twentieth centuries. Chemical companies seem to follow oil companies, and power stations are needed in any state to provide electricity to homes and businesses.

High-Risk Asbestos Exposure in Oklahoma

Oklahoma’s oil industry is the pride of the state but working in it was, for much of the twentieth century, a potential cause for asbestos exposure. Both the drilling companies and the refineries used asbestos products because asbestos is both a highly effective form of insulation and a fire retardant as well. Asbestos was also used both as insulation and as gasket material in the natural gas extraction and transmission business.

The areas in and around Tulsa and Oklahoma City are laced with jobsites that have a high probability for asbestos use and employee exposure. Much of this may have occurred before the late 1980s when asbestos products were taken off the market. However the most deadly asbestos-caused disease has a long latency period, of up to twenty years or more.

Asbestos Diseases: Mesothelioma & Asbestosis

That disease is mesothelioma cancer, caused by asbestos fibers that are inhaled and work their way into the membranes lining the lungs, around the heart and in the abdominal cavity. Mesothelioma is still taking its toll, decades after industries ceased using asbestos products. The material that is left is just as dangerous, perhaps more so as it ages and begins to deteriorate.

Asbestos can also cause asbestosis, an affliction wherein the asbestos fibers scar the lungs permanently and reduce lung capacity. While it is not cancerous, asbestosis can be fatal. Malignant mesothelioma is lethal; patients who are diagnosed with it have a survival period of twelve to eighteen months.

Asbestos Jobsites in Oklahoma

The jobsites listed below are locations in Oklahoma where asbestos was used in structures and on equipment and where asbestos exposure was likely for at least some employees. If you have been employed by any of these businesses you should discuss the implications of asbestos exposure with your doctor, even if it occurred many years ago. If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma or an asbestos related illness, contact an Oklahoma mesothelioma lawyer about compensation that may be owed to you by the asbestos companies and product manufacturers.

Mesothelioma & Asbestosis Deaths in Oklahoma

In 2004 a study was released that analyzed the reported deaths from asbestosis and mesothelioma on a nationwide basis. The period of time that was studied stretched from the end of 1979 to the year 2000. In Oklahoma the researchers found that 104 deaths had been reported as due to asbestosis. The mesothelioma deaths in the state were reported as being somewhere between 232 and 397. The range is due to the fact that during the period under scrutiny lung cancer may have been reported as the cause of death when the primary illness was pleural mesothelioma, cancer of the lining of the lungs.

In 1999 the federal government began keeping accurate statistics on deaths due to mesothelioma. Over that period there were 141 such deaths in Oklahoma. The illnesses and fatalities from asbestos exposure continue because it often takes twenty years or more after asbestos exposure for the symptoms of mesothelioma to appear. Annual deaths from mesothelioma are expected to continue to rise slightly for the next several years and then level off.
