South Carolina Asbestos Areas
Early in the twentieth century South Carolina began to expand beyond its agricultural base of cotton and tobacco crops. The state developed a thriving textile industry and began to attract chemical companies that are found throughout the south, especially where oil development has occurred. The state also took advantage of its coast with the advent of some shipyard activity, both civilian and for the United States Navy.
There was not a lot of heavy industry developed in South Carolina at that time, but as the population and commercial demands grew so did the number of steam-driven power plants. All of these facilities made abundant use of asbestos products for the purpose of heat control and insulation. In an era when asbestos was not recognized as the potent carcinogen as it is today, the resilient material with high insulating qualities was popular for both home and commercial use. Railroads and factories used asbestos products as did steam-driven electrical plants, where heat was a problem for operating employees.
The result is a substantial number of jobsites in South Carolina where workers may well have been exposed to asbestos on the job. Breathing asbestos fibers from construction dust or just old, crumbling insulation was a hazard throughout the country long before it was acknowledged as such. Malignant mesothelioma is the most lethal result of asbestos exposure – a form of cancer that attacks the lungs and the abdominal cavity.
It takes years, even decades to develop after asbestos exposure, which is why many South Carolinians who worked at jobsites such as those listed below are just now being diagnosed with asbestos-caused cancer. People who have suffered from asbestos exposure are entitled to compensation; if you or a family member worked at any of these sites and are now burdened with asbestosis or mesothelioma cancer, contact a South Carolina mesothelioma lawyer who will see to it that your claims are filed and dealt with quickly.

Asbestos Deaths in South Carolina
In 2004 a non-profit environmental organization release a thorough study of deaths caused by asbestos across this country, during the years 1979-2001. Over this period asbestos was acknowledged, finally, to be a hazardous carcinogen that affected people through inhalation. The study developed conclusions about the number of deaths caused by asbestosis and mesothelioma over that period and presented them broken out by state. For a state with minimal heavy industry, South Carolina was fairly high on the list – ranked 22nd among states for asbestos related deaths. Asbestosis caused 308 asbestosis deaths over the period scrutinized in the study; the conclusion for mesothelioma deaths was a range between 326 and 556.
The reason for the range is the fact that the federal government did not begin to track mesothelioma deaths until 1999. The analysts on the study developed their figures based on reports of asbestos-related cancer and assumptions that lung cancer associated with long time asbestos exposure might well have been pleural mesothelioma cancer. During the period from 1999 trough 2004 the government reported 177 mesothelioma deaths in South Carolina.
