Mesothelioma Death May Be Linked to Post 9/11 Air Quality

March 21, 2006

A Deborah Reeve, a paramedic active in a New York City morgue following the tragedies of September 11, 2001, died on March 15 of an asbestos related cancer. Her family and doctors are now claiming that Reeves mesothelioma, a life threatening lung cancer, was caused by extensive exposure to toxic dusts from the World Trade Center site, Ground Zero.

Deborah Reeve first experienced signs of declining lung health in 2003 when she developed a debilitating cough, which would ultimately lead to her retirement and recent death.

While city officials are claiming that it is too soon to determine a definite link between Ground Zero exposure and cancer, there is substantial evidence supporting the theory.

To date, there have been approximately 20 deaths that are thought to be the result of unhealthy Ground Zero air exposure. In February of 2006, the EPA and its former chief of staff Christine Todd Whitman were challenged by a class action lawsuit alleging their lack of substantiated information for Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan residents regarding the quality of the post 9-11 air.

According to prosecuting attorneys, the EPA vastly underplayed the dangers that the air quality may pose to highly exposed residents and workers. The 9/11 Commission proved this claim successfully showing that the air was still dense with asbestos, lead, PCBs and other dangerous toxins.

Despite the EPAs knowledge of this information, the National Security Council allegedly manipulated evidence and as a result some New York residents suffered harmful levels of these pollutants.
