"Asbestos Lawsuits Move Into Wider Area"
April 2, 2003
Congress is now debating limiting asbestos lawsuits, but juries in New York and Illinois reached two of the largest asbestos lawsuits. The asbestos lawsuits were part of the newest type of asbestos lawsuits that have been filed against companies that never made asbestos but used asbestos in their products. The companies have been accused of knowing the dangers of asbestos but failing to warn the workers.
An Illinois ordered United States Steel Corp. to pay $250 million to a former employee who had been diagnosed with mesothelioma. The company decided to settle for $50 million. In New York, a jury awarded $47 million to a former utility worker that had developed mesothelioma after working in plants owned by Con Ed and Long Island Lighting.
All forms of asbestos have been shown to cause cancer. If exposed, those individuals risk asbestos-illnesses, including a rare, inoperable cancer called mesothelioma.
