"Man Sentenced for Unsafe Asbestos Removal"
June 6, 2006
A New York man has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for the unsafe removal of asbestos, a fibrous mineral known to cause serious illness and disease.
At the beginning of the year, 39-year-old James Taylor, the supervisor for AVALA Asbestos Removal Corporation, pleaded guilty to violating the Clean Air Act, which regulates air quality standards.
Taylor admitted that during his four years with the removal company, he regularly removed or directed other employees to remove asbestos without adding water to restrain the release of hazardous asbestos fibers into the air.
Taylor also directed asbestos removal where no sufficient containment was built, and allowed the removal to continue regardless of knowing that air-monitoring test results were false.
Asbestos can be extremely harmful to human health if the fibers are tampered with by a disturbance, deterioration, remodel, renovation, etc. and the fibers become airborne. When injected or inhaled, these toxic fibers will permanently implant themselves into the lungs and cause serous cancers and illnesses including mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other respiratory complications.
Removing asbestos from building materials should only be done by an asbestos removal professional to ensure that the proper removal techniques are used so as not to release the fibers into the air.
