In the mid-1970s, the government began regulating asbestos use. Asbestos is a known carcinogen, causing a variety of cancers including mesothelioma . Most people will come into contact with asbestos at some point because of its once widespread use. However, not all people who come into contact with asbestos are at risk of developing an asbestos-related disease. Asbestos exposure is primarily dangerous when the fibers become airborne and are inhaled. Asbestos fibers are usually released in asbestos-containing materials that are damaged or otherwise compromised.
