Calif. Asbestos Removal Companies Pay $430,000 to Settle Claims

July 25, 2006
A northern California Asbestos abatement company and property management firm have settled asbestos claims with air quality regulators who accused them of improperly removing the dangerous fibers from buildings in San Francisco Bay Area. The asbestos companies agreed to pay $430,000 in fines.

According to the Bay Area Air Quality Management, the fines were the largest the agency has ever levied for asbestos removal penalties.

Based on claims that the companies hired unqualified workers to remove asbestos from the ceiling of an apartment complex in Concord, a property management firm operating as USA Properties Fund Inc. and USA Multifamily Management Inc. will pay $300,000 in penalties.

Furthermore, a lawsuit filed in Contra Costa Country claims that the workers neglected to protect themselves and the complex residents from asbestos exposure.

Synergy Environmental Inc. and Synergy Enterprises Inc., an asbestos removal contractor based in Hayward, will pay $130,000 in fines for failing to adequately warn regulators of over 200 asbestos abatement jobs they performed in 2002 and 2003.

Asbestos is a dangerous group of fibrous minerals that were used in hundreds of industries worldwide. Inhaling or ingesting asbestos fibers can cause serious diseases including mesothelioma, a deadly cancer that has been directly linked to asbestos exposure.
