Laryngeal Cancer and Asbestos
According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, there is insufficient evidence regarding the relationship between laryngeal cancer and asbestos exposure, though it has been proven that exposure to asbestos does elevate a person's risk for developing laryngeal cancer. Considered an occupational disease, laryngeal cancer and asbestos exposure may be a risk factor.
Asbestos is a material that is used in a number of different products and is often present in railroad, automotive, construction, and factory work environments. Asbestos exposure can lead to asbestosis or mesothelioma cancer, but may also cause a number of different types of cancer, including laryngeal cancer.
The larynx is located in the throat area. It contains the vocal chords and is responsible for protecting the airway to the lungs during swallowing. Laryngeal cancer and asbestos are linked because asbestos is harmful when inhaled or swallowed and the larynx is involved in both processes.
Laryngeal cancer accounts for two to five percent of all cancers diagnosed each year, which translates into 10,000 laryngeal cancer diagnoses and 4,000 deaths from laryngeal cancer every year. Men are twice as likely to develop laryngeal cancer as women. The average age of diagnoses is 50 to 70 years. Both of these statistics parallel the development of other asbestos related illnesses, perhaps further suggesting a link between laryngeal cancer and asbestos.
The symptoms of laryngeal cancer and asbestos related cancers are also similar. Laryngeal cancer symptoms include: hoarseness, persistent cough, persistent sore throat, pain or difficulty in swallowing, difficulty breathing, ear pain, weight loss, and the development of a lump or mass in the neck areas.
Laryngeal cancer and asbestos related ailments of the larynx can be treated depending on the size and location of the cancerous cells and the time of cancer detection. Radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and partial or full removal of the larynx are all possible treatment options. When the larynx is partially of fully removed, alternate means of breathing and speaking may have to be established.
If you or someone you love has been exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos and developed laryngeal cancer it may be possible to establish a relationship between laryngeal cancer and asbestos exposure in a legal case in order to seek compensation for your medical expenses, loss of income, and pain and suffering.
