Naval Submarine Base
The Naval Submarine Base is located in Groton, Connecticut along the Thames River. The facility began operating as a Navy yard and was eventually converted into a submarine base in 1916.
During World War II, the base expanded and with the changes brought about by nuclear power, the Naval Submarine Base was forced to go in yet another direction. However, unlike other shipyards at this time, the Naval Submarine Base flourished. By the 1960’s, it had become known as the largest submarine base in the world and served as a workplace for more than 8,000 employees.
Base Has Influential Impact on Navy
Today, the Naval Submarine Base is known as one of the most influential facilities for the United States Navy. There are more than 400 buildings on the property, in addition to housing facilities for the more than 10,000 civilian and active duty workers who live on base with their families.
The shipyard has become widely known as “The Submarine Capital of the World.” After the First World War, due to the high numbers of workers employed in Groton, the Navy started schools and various training facilities on base.
Pentagon Suggests Base Closure Due to Asbestos
In 2005, the Pentagon suggested the Naval Submarine Base be closed due to newly found problems with asbestos at shipyards. At this time, asbestos exposure was of high concern for those working at shipyards since asbestos was used in the production of newer ships and refurbishing of old ships.
Due to the wide use of asbestos at shipyards across the country, thousands of workers were exposed to the harmful carcinogen. Similar to other shipyards, asbestos was likely used at the Naval Submarine Base aboard the ships for its fire retardant capabilities.
Several lawsuits have already been filed against the base for the health complications workers have suffered. When ingested or inhaled, asbestos fibers can cause fatal illnesses such as mesothelioma and other types of lung cancer.
