$2 Million Granted for Asbestos Cleanup

According to recent reports, the federal government is giving $2 million for the clean up of a contaminated part of Nashua’s Millyard Complex.

The site has long been watched over for redevelopment and the grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will help finance the asbestos removal.

Boiler House Set for Removal

The Boiler House, which sits on the property and was once a site for a textile mill, now serves as a location for houses, art galleries and businesses.

"The timing allows the city to consider this impact as we review the latest plans for the Broad Street Parkway project," explains Kathy Hersh, the economic development director for the city.

Money Helps Cleanup Site

U.S. Senators Judd Gregg John Sununu and are playing a crucial role in helping to secure the money that will be used for the cleanup on the property.

Contaminated soils, asbestos and underground storage tanks will all be removed from the site.

“The asbestos has to be cleaned up whether the building is rehabbed or gets demolished,” says Deb Chrisholm, who provides the city with technical expertise in relation to environmental issues. “The contaminated soil is typical of what’s found in urban fill areas and isn’t a huge problem.”

The city reportedly received a $200,000 grant last year from the federal Environmental Protection Agency for the asbestos cleanup.
