Todd Alameda Naval Shipyard
The Todd Shipyards Corporation had several major locations for the building and repair of ships, including a location that became known as the Alameda Naval Shipyard, formerly Alameda Works. In existence since the early 1900s in San Francisco, the Alameda shipyard near the Golden Gate Bridge was one of the Todd Corporation's most important facilities. It had the capability to make very large cargo vessels, tankers, and passenger ships.
Peak Years During World War II
During the World War II years, the Alameda shipyard was called the Bethlehem Alameda Shipyard. Its workers repaired and serviced more than 1,000 military vessels and built many P-2 troop transport ships there. The shipyard also produced structural steel. The Alameda yard's shipbuilding years wound down after WWII, ceasing in the early 1950s and closing completely in 1956.
Few If Any Asbestos Precautions
Thousands of men and women, both military personnel and civilians, worked at or near the Todd Alameda Naval Shipyard during WWII and later. As in other shipyards of the era, few if any safety precautions were used when the many asbestos-containing ship components were installed, moved or replaced. The asbestos exposure that some individuals received was toxic, and may have induced diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma (cancer of the lining of the chest cavity).
Shipbuilding and repairing require many tasks that bring workers into contact with asbestos or asbestos dust, as does the production of structural steel. Thousands of former employees at shipyards such as the Todd Alameda Naval Shipyard are now being diagnosed with asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer.
