Mesothelioma: 12 Essential Facts

Contribute to Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer Research

These days, cancer accounts for one of every four deaths in America. In the coming year, about 560,000 people will die from cancer in the U.S., and about 1.4 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed ─ not including the million-plus cases of skin cancer. The costs to our economy of cancer are staggering: more than $200 billion dollars a year in medical costs and loss of productivity.

Preventable Cancers

Much of this tragedy is preventable. For example, tobacco use still accounts for nearly one in five deaths in the U.S. Asbestos and other carcinogens in the workplace are greatly restricted compared to their presence in the first half of the twentieth century, but the progress made against asbestos (and tobacco) as agents of cancer comes too late for thousands of Americans. Lung cancer and mesothelioma are still far too common.

Cancer Research

Many organizations, both governmental and private, are constantly striving to improve the healthcare of patients with cancer, and to identify the causes, cures and treatments for the many different types of cancer. Cancer is actually a very large group of diseases, each with its own unique cause and profile. Although great progress has been made in the fight against cancer, much remains to be done.

A Spectrum of Research Areas

Cancer research covers a broad range of areas, including:

· Molecular biology, physiology, oncology
· Detection
· Screening
· Identification of risk factors
· Demographic and socioeconomic influences
· Prevention
· treatment
· Patient care
· Pain management
