$200M Settlement Reached for Asarco Cleanup

A $200 million settlement has reportedly been reached by Asarco regarding the toxic contamination that has been blamed on their operations in Washington.

The company agreed to the settlement in an effort to emerge from bankruptcy.

Money to go to the EPA

According to reports, more than half of the settlement amount will go to the state and the federal Environmental Protection Agency programs.

This portion of the settlement money will go towards cleaning up the asbestos and other chemicals that have affected the areas surrounding the site.

The remainder of the settlement is set to cover the cleanup at B&L Woodwaste in Milton and at other sites owned and by Asarco where asbestos needs to be removed.

Community Affected by Asbestos

In three counties throughout the state of Washington, Pierce, King and Thurston, residents are at risk for potential asbestos exposure due to the contaminated Superfund sites.

Not only is the settlement providing funding for the company to get themselves out of bankruptcy, but the communities affected by asbestos and other hazardous chemicals will also benefit.
