After reports of asbestos at the Illinois Beach State Park have been released to the public, residents and officials worry about the beach’s safety.
Senator Dick Durbin has requested to meet with both federal and state officials regarding the asbestos problem.
Investigation Finds Asbestos
Earlier this week, an investigation conducted by the Sun Times talked of the concerns surrounding the asbestos problem at this popular vacation spot.
The investigation led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to question whether the beach was suitable for human use.
Past Problems
This is not the first time the beach’s safety has been put into question.
In April 2007, a letter sent by the EPA to state officials voiced concern regarding the “significantly elevated” levels of asbestos that were discovered at the park’s beaches during air monitoring tests the previous summer.
Although studies have concluded that the beaches are supposedly safe, the senator is not convinced.
“I want a clear understanding about any potential threats of asbestos there,” said Durbin.
The Illinois Dunesland Preservation Society recently charged officials with failing to efficiently remove the asbestos ridden debris that washes upon shore.
Those involved suggest that the beaches are tested each week during the busy summer months.
