The Asbestos Issue In Campus Buildings

Recent reports claim that many students and faculty members are in the dark when it comes asbestos problems in school buildings.

Recent examples of which, such as Butte Hall of Cal State Chico, are becoming increasingly evident.

The asbestos problem in this particular building has gotten so bad that it is making it hard for ceiling lights to be repaired, causing students to take their tests in little to no lighting.

Lack of Funding for Asbestos Removal

According to James Jessee, the director of Academic Publications, Facilities and Database Operations, the asbestos problem at Butte Hall is preventing them form repairing the lights and ballasts that control the electric current throughout the building.

“We’re afraid in going in to repair, we could release the asbestos, creating a bigger problem,” explains Jessee.

Jessee also says that the renovation of the building could possibly cost more than $50 million.

Asbestos Buildup Over the Years

The classrooms in Butte Hall are reportedly in the same condition as they were 35 years ago, when the building was built.

Robert Jackson, from the political science department, says that the asbestos problem is becoming harder and harder to ignore.

Veronica Burke, a nursing major at the school says she thinks that the students and faculty have a right to know if there’s a health problem in the building, lack of funding or not.
