Asbestos Complaints at School Under Investigation

An investigation is currently underway at an Indiana high school where concerned faculty members and parents are worried an asbestos school problem is out of control.

Construction workers began removing asbestos from the school after a complaint was filed in early spring and according to school officials, the asbestos is still not gone.

Asbestos Complaint Filed

The Indiana Department of Labor reported that an asbestos complaint was filed with them in May regarding concerns over safety and health hazards.

The notice supposedly complained that:
· The employees of the contractors didn’t provide the results of air sampling
· The employees of the contractors were not permitted to remove air monitoring for asbestos
· The air sample results that were provided were falsified

Department of Labor Investigates

The DOL is reportedly investigating the allegations that have been made by the school against the workers who were hired to remove the harmful carcinogen.

“The DOL is conducting a health-related investigation centered around the work practices and procedures of contractors at Central High School,” explained DOL spokesman Sean Keefer.

Construction Put on Hold

School official’s report that until the asbestos problem is under control and the employees of the contractors are up front with them, they have stopped further removal from occurring in many of the classrooms.

“It’s a safety issue,” says Principal Dick Daniel, “ The workers are saying that in one area there is no more asbestos but more testing needs to happen before we can allow them to continue to work.”
