EPA asbestos report for El Dorado County could cause public panic

March 30, 2005
The federal EPA has recently received preliminary data on asbestos levels in El Dorado County, California, and the county’s top environmental official is outraged, afraid of the reaction the report will have on the community.

The EPA report will show extremely high airborne asbestos exposure rates, exceeding the amount in Libby, Montana, the nation’s worst case of asbestos and asbestos-related diseases. A recommendation of the formation of a committee of scientific advisers will also be included in the report.

One of the EPA’s testing techniques last October included playing a softball game at a school field to measure lifelike asbestos-breathing exposure. According to the county, many of the sites now testing for high levels of asbestos previously showed no asbestos in recent soil studies.

The natural occurrence of asbestos formations is present in at least 44 of California’s 58 counties. Inhalation of asbestos fibers is linked to deadly diseases.
