Asbestos Found in Elementary School

Bangs Avenue Elementary School in New Jersey was closed last Friday by asbestos consultants and the federal Environmental Agency due to asbestos in the school.

450 students and 90 staff members were told to not come to school after Ahera consultants found a plaster-like substance fell from one of the classrooms ceilings and contained asbestos.

Action Being Taken

Asbestos is a mineral fiber that is commonly used in a variety of building construction materials for insulation. It has been linked with a variety of severe health affects such as lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.
School officials released a notification to the public stating, “Ahera Consultants will be assessing the severity of the situation over the weekend, after which a decision will be made concerning whether or not to close the Bangs Avenue Elementary School for the remainder of the school year.”

The school, which was built in 1912, was supposed to be renovated until the state Schools Construction Corp. ran out of money, pushing the construction back for some time.

“Students and staff will not be permitted to return to the building until it has been declared safe for occupancy,” states a report from the district. “The purpose of the inspection is to determine whether or not any other area of the building harbors asbestos.”
