French Senate report blames government for country's asbestos problems

October26, 2005

A French Senate report blamed the government for failing to adequately respond to the country's asbestos contamination problem, which has, as a result, accelerated cancer deaths attributed to asbestos.

In the next 20 to 25 years, the report forecasted asbestos related cancer deaths will accelerate to 60,000 - 100,000, up from 35,000 in the 30 years that ended in 1995. With estimated costs of 27-37 billion eur in the next 20 years to treat victims, the report criticized a permanent committee of government, business and scientific officials for the growing asbestos related problems.

Asbestos was widely used in the U.S. as an insulation material until the 1970s when it was discovered to be a carcinogen. Over the years, asbestos was phased out, but not before countless numbers of workers were exposed to high levels of the potentially deadly fibers. Hundreds of thousands of injury claims were since made for the deaths, cancer cases and other health problems suffered because of exposure, bankrupting dozens of U.S. companies.
