A Mesothelioma and Asbestos Information and Treatment Center Resource
According to a recent study, outlays for asbestos claims have totaled $54 billion and many believe that the number of claimants and total payouts will only continue to rise.
The study was conducted by Sebago Associates commissioned by the American Insurance Association.
Asbestos Remains a Problem
Statistics show that an estimated 1.3 million people working in the construction industry are still being exposed to the harmful carcinogen known as asbestos.
Drywall hangers, pipe fitters and carpenters are also at risk.
“We still have homes, offices, hospitals with asbestos; we have underground infrastructure, sewers and tunnels that are built with asbestos,” explains Linda Reinstein, the executive director and co-founder of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization.
No One’s Taking Action
In the 1970’s, Dr. George Riegel began preaching about the dangers of asbestos, though much of what he was saying seems to have fallen on deaf ears.
“It’s in thousands, if not millions of homes; it’s in most homes built before 1978, in asbestos floor tiles, steam pipe insulation, and in vermiculite in attic insulation,” explains Riegel.
Although Senate has passed some legislation regarding asbestos, no real steps have been reached and no dates have been set to take action regarding this horrific problem in America.
