Concerns Over Asbestos Payouts

New concerns are surfacing over the slow going of the asbestos settlement payouts owed to victims of asbestos exposure.

Nearly a year after submitting claims for clients to the Owens Corning/Fibreboard Asbestos Personal Injury Trust, many attorneys are still awaiting their payout.

Claimants Wait for Compensation

According to attorney Jimmy Rogers, the blame shouldn’t necessarily be put on the trust employees in Delaware.

On the contrary, people should be taking a look at why there is such a long list of claimants who are due compensation because of exposure.

“You can’t place blame on the trust, because they have to contend with so many claims,” explains Rogers.

Trust to Payout More

As part of Owens Corning’s six-year bankruptcy case, the trust has reportedly assumed responsibility for compensating victims of exposure.

The majority of victims are construction workers and shipbuilders who have developed lung diseases, including mesothelioma.

Since 2006, the trust has paid $390 million on 70,000 claims, though since then, they have received 256,000 additional claims.
