Asbestos Problems Arise Again at School

Asbestos has become an ongoing problem at St. Mary’s high school in Newark and parents and faculty are becoming concerned.

Asbestos was reportedly detected in insulation of the ceiling of the wrestling team’s locker room and traces have been found in the school’s cafeteria.

Reoccurring Problem

In November of 2006 the archdiocese’s property maintenance team reportedly scrubbed the pipe in the cafeteria that was infected with asbestos.

“Although we believed that the scrubbing had removed all traces of asbestos, the investigator from the Environmental Protection Agency felt that some trace of residue might still exist on the pipe, and ordered re-scrubbing,” explains James Goodness, the Director of Communications for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark.

Pieces of asbestos reportedly became loose during the renovation of the bathrooms at the school and could have created a possible fiber release episode.

High School Receives Notices from EPA

During an August inspection the school was given a notice of deficiency for having failed the asbestos management plan.

The inspector also claimed the school’s maintenance team and custodial staff failed to receive the required asbestos removal training.

The Health Department also found asbestos debris on the school’s grounds, which has been the cause of much concern and worry for parents and faculty members.
