A Mesothelioma and Asbestos Information and Treatment Center Resource
An area where asbestos was found in the past is being questioned once again after it supposedly passed safety tests.
Many are saying that Oak Street Beach, which is located in Illinois, needs to be retested for asbestos because the initial tests weren’t conducted properly.
EPA Urges New Tests to be Done
According to reports, a scientist on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s asbestos advisory board is urging for retesting to be done.
“They should go back and retest,” explains James Webber, a scientist who also teaches at the State University of New York in Albany.
Testing Done in Past
In 2004, scientists from the University of Illinois at Chicago found asbestos fibers in samples taken at Oak Street Beach.
Reports from this testing show that the most deadly form of asbestos, amphibole, was found at the beach.
However, now the Illinois Dunesland Preservation Society is questioning these test results.
Jeff Camplin, who is an asbestos consultant with the Dunesland Preservation Society, among others, are now very concerned that the tests may be inaccurate and there may be higher levels of asbestos at the beach than previously thought.
