Focus on Asbestos Related Illness in Trial

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

According to reports, patients are currently being recruited for a clinical trial that will be targeting the asbestos related illness, mesothelioma.

The trial will focus on radiation and chemotherapy protocol for pleural mesothelioma, which is a cancer that affects the lung’s lining and is caused by exposure to asbestos.

Trial Hopes to Find More Efficient treatment

The current method of treatment for the illness is to remove the ling that has been affected by mesothelioma.

“In this study, we will investigate whether a combination of chemotherapy and radiation targeted directly at the lung’s lining can improve outcomes while avoiding surgery,” explains principal investigator Dr. Robert Taub.

How the Treatment Will Work

Researchers expect the targeted radiation to kill the cancerous cells located on the surface of the lung.

Many are hoping that this treatment will be more affective since it will spare parts of the lung and the essential tissues around the lung.

Patients who are accepted into the study will reportedly receive several rounds of the treatment.

“The trial is also significant, because our center is the only one nationwide that is offering this experimental therapy to treat pleural mesothelioma,” says Taub.
