After five years of debate in the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, the Ban Asbestos in America Act finally passed a crucial committee vote.
The bill, which seeks to ban all asbestos products in America, is set to be presented before the Senate this fall.
Bill Details
The bill was recently passed unanimously indicating a large power shift since Republican lawmakers have reportedly been trying to brush it aside for years.
If the bill was to become law, asbestos will be completely banned within two years.
The bill is also set to provide $50 million in funding for medical asbestos and mesothelioma research.
Sen. Patty Murray, who has been one of the lead advocates in the fight to ban asbestos, has sponsored the bill.
Asbestos Causes Harm
Asbestos has proven to be a deadly carcinogen and inhaling the fibers often leads to cancer.
Cancer therapies such as chemotherapy have been ineffective in ridding patient’s body of the cancer caused by asbestos and the lawsuits filed because of the carcinogen are in the thousands.
Many businesses have gone bankrupt due to asbestos related lawsuits.
Murray’s bill is expected to be voted upon by next fall and many believe it will earn the support of both parties.
