BP Criticized for Lack of Safety

After BP recently pleaded guilty to exposing more than 354 employees to asbestos, the corporation is being criticized for their lack of safety and workplace exposure.

Workers Exposed While Checking Steel Pipes

The exposure occurred when BP reportedly sent hundreds of their workers to check the safety of steel pipes just after the company discovered that there was corrosion on the inside of them.

As part of their job, the workers were expected to tear insulation off the pipes so they could be closely monitored and tested.

However, beneath the insulation was a sealant that contained asbestos and was putting the employees at risk for exposure.

BP Takes Blame

Earlier this year, BP settled the ongoing lawsuit and agreed to pay $6, 375 in fines.

Reports conducted by state Occupational Safety and Health records claim that an estimated 345 employees were exposed to asbestos and are now at risk due to their job requirements.

Weakness Exposed in BP’s Safety Guidelines

Investigations done by state health officials say that there were “several apparent weaknesses in the safety culture” at BP.

Reports also state that the company’s industrial safety staff was stretch too “thin” as has been the case with past crises, such as the oil spill that occurred in March 2006.
