Inspector Costs Calaveras County Thousands
A former inspector in Calaveras County, CA has reportedly cost the community hundreds of thousands of dollars in lawsuit settlements involving construction problems.
According to the Calaveras city counsel, the inspector has been involved in several lawsuits for allegedly allowing inappropriate building practices.
Chief Building Inspector Denies Allegations
Ray Waller, the former chief building inspector for the county, denies that he did anything wrong and believes that the counsel fabricated the documents and allegations.
Waller is threatening to take legal action, claiming that he was wrongfully fired.
However, the documents serving as proof of the reason for his deployment say otherwise.
Accusations of Improper Asbestos Removal
In 2003, Waller supposedly cost the county thousands in legal fees, fines and cleanup expenses for the improper and illegal removal of asbestos from several construction sites he was responsible for.
Workers were reportedly hired to do renovations and hit asbestos-laden materials that an employee later unknowingly spread when he turned on the air-conditioning system.
Reports claim that asbestos dust spread throughout the building and even into the office of the local Air Pollution Control District.
“He deserved to be fired for the whole thing,” explains Donna Koplen, who owns the general contracting firm that was hired to do the renovations. “We weren't told about any asbestos being in the building.”
As a result, the county reportedly paid an estimated $500,000 to hire licensed asbestos removers take care of the problem.
