Asbestos at High School Site in Napa Valley
According to reports, asbestos was recently found at a high school in Napa Valley, California.
School officials from the site of the future school, which will be called American Canyon High School, claim that they are taking all measures to remove the harmful substance.
Construction Not Delayed
The asbestos cleanup reportedly won’t delay the construction of the $126 million high school that’s being built on a 50-acre piece of land.
Construction is expected to start in mid-May and will supposedly be finished in the fall of 2010.
Asbestos Found
Asbestos is a mineral that comes from serpentine rock and is commonly found in Northern California.
Officials say that the 1,800 cubic yards of the substance will be temporarily placed at a site nearby, where a middle school is planned to be built.
However, the state Department of Toxic Substances Control, the work will be conducted under their supervision.
Plans for Removal
The environmental consultant for the district, Bradley Erskine, is currently making plans for the permanent removal of the substance.
The total cost of the removal is reportedly not yet known, although stockpiling the asbestos at the future middle school site will be an estimated $15,000.
