Former Chrysler Employee Awarded $25M in Asbestos Case

A New York jury awarded $25 million in compensation to a former brake reliner at DaimlerChrysler AG, who lost a lung after developing mesothelioma, a deadly cancer linked to asbestos exposure.

Chrysler, one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturers, was found guilty of reckless disregard for failing to warn its employees of the serious dangers of asbestos exposure—which it knew about since the 1930s—and was ordered to pay the victim $25 million in damages.

Case Details

Alfred D. Ulisse, 73, worked as a brake reliner at Chrysler between 1960 and 1981 where he was frequently exposed to high levels of asbestos, a group of dangerous fibers known to cause serious illnesses including mesothelioma, asbestosis (chronic lung ailment), lung cancer, and other cancers.

Asbestos-related illnesses, however, have a latency period of several decades. Ulisse discovered he had developed mesothelioma and was forced to have his right lung surgically removed as a result of the disease.

Ulisse and his wife Margaret filed an asbestos lawsuit against Chrysler claiming that the automaker recklessly failed to protect its employees against the dangers of asbestos.

The jury did not believe Chrysler’s defense in court, which claimed that handling asbestos brakes is safe, and awarded $25 million to Ulisse for economic and non-economic damages.
