The discovery of asbestos at the Coachman Motel in Bloomington, IL has delayed its scheduled demolition.

Asbestos reportedly was found at the motel and its removal will now cost the city more in fees, but is necessary if they want to proceed with the project.

Plans to Remove Asbestos

According to reports, the city and its demolition contractor, Kirk’s C & D Recycling have yet to map out a plan to remove the asbestos from the Coachmen Motel.

“We know we have a problem but we haven’t determined how we are going to solve it,” explains Mark Huber, the Planning and Code Enforcement Director for the city. “It is premature to say it will come down in a month. We don’t know yet.”

Motel History

The Coachmen was opened in 1961 and was built using vermiculite, which was poured between the rooms to make them soundproof.

“Being the 1960’s, asbestos was added to the vermiculite,” explains Huber.

Contractors Discover Asbestos

The asbestos was reportedly found by contractors who were working removing asbestos from a nearby building.

However, according to Huber, the harmful substance was not detected in the original inspection of the motel.
