Asbestos Concerns in Sausalito

Officials in Sausalito, CA, recently shut down a construction site due to concerns about the dust containing asbestos.

The project was being conducted near Bay Model and after residents issued a complaint about the dust, health officials banned the area and began conducting tests.

VA Construction Site in Question

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is reportedly working on a $7 million project that will eventually serve as a research center.

During the time of work, wind supposedly blew dust into nearby communities, which made the residents concerned.

Residents Not Informed

Jeremy Graves, the Planning Director in Sausalito, says that it would have been appropriate for the Veterans Affairs to inform those living in nearby neighborhoods about the construction and potential risks.

“We knew nothing of it,” says Graves.

Asbestos Found at Site

A study conducted showed that asbestos was existent in the soil and groundwater surrounding the construction site.

It will now reportedly take an estimated two years to build the facility since the asbestos will first need to be removed.
