Asbestos Exposure At West Dallas Facility

Previous workers and residents were exposed to asbestos at a West Dallas mineral processing plant.

Those exposed are now showing signs of asbestos-related illnesses such as asbestosis and cancer.

X-Rays Show Signs of Illness

The initial findings are based on 421 chest X-rays conducted in the past couple of months on former workers, their families, neighborhood residents and students of nearby schools.

“I think it’s pretty alarming,” commented Dr. Ron Anderson, the president and chief executive of Parkland Health and Hospital System.

Doctors analyzed 252 exams and of those, 15 showed signs of asbestos-related illness, while others showed spots on their lungs that will require further evaluation.

Controversial Plant

In 2005, the federal government announced that the Texas Vermiculite plant, which was operated by W.R. Grace & Co., could have exposed employees and residents to asbestos from 1953 to 1992.

The Texas plant was one of the many that processes vermiculite, which was shipped from a W.R. Grace mine in Libby, Montana, the infamous site of many asbestos contamination cases.

Of the 300 people known to have worked at the plant, about 80 have died and the others are still being examined.
