Towns in Eastern Plains Uncover Asbestos Problems

Many small towns in the Eastern plains of the United States are dealing with asbestos issues.

City officials are running into financial problems mixed with the need to rid old buildings of the cancer causing asbestos.

Problems at the Schindler Building

The Schindler building in Denver is one of the many buildings causing debate.

The building reportedly never recovered from a 1965 flood and is now left standing and corroded with asbestos.

“It was dangerous, but we couldn’t afford to do anything with it. It was mind-boggling,” explains Mayor Jim Johnson.

Other Towns Wrestling with Asbestos

Several other towns in this part of America are also facing the same problems with asbestos as Denver.

Other communities dealing with asbestos problems include:

  • Eaton- An abandoned sugar-beet plant would require a cleanup price that is triple what the town can afford to pay
  • Eads-An historic-preservation project is facing more than $100,000 for cleanup
  • Fowler-A project to renovate two affordable-housing projects has come to a standstill after asbestos was discovered

“There’s no cheap way for small towns to dispose of asbestos safely, and there’s no money,” explains Mark Walker of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
