According to recent reports, Eerie County in New York has reached a settlement in the suit against several asbestos manufacturers.
The county joined the ongoing class-action lawsuit several years ago.
Companies Accused
The lawsuit was filed against Celotex and Carey Canada several years ago when Dennis Gorski served at the county executive in Eerie.
Both companies are accused of injury and property damage stemming from asbestos building materials.
After the suit was initially filed in 1990, the companies were forced to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Thousands of Lawsuits Filed
Reports claim that the county’s suit against Celotex and Carey Canada is just one of thousands that have been filed.
Although a settlement has been reached, Cheryl Green, the County Attorney for Eerie County claims the money won’t be enough to clear all of the buildings that are infested with asbestos.
When asbestos was removed from one floor of a 16-floor building two years ago, the removal cost $400,000.
