Third Family Member Dies From Mesothelioma, Lawsuit Filed
A mesothelioma lawsuit was filed today on behalf of a man who died from mesothelioma. He was the third member of his family to die from the asbestos-related disease.
Donald Lozo was 67 when mesothelioma claimed his life in August 2005. The disease also killed his mother, Mary, and sister, Catherine.
The deaths are statistically significant given the extremely small Natural Bridge, New York, population. The town is home to less than 400 people, and mesothelioma is very rare—affecting only about one in 100,000.
According to the lawsuit, Lozo was exposed to asbestos while working at the Carbola Talc Mine in Natural Bridge in the 1950s and 60s. The lawsuit alleges that Lozo suffered additional asbestos exposure during the mid-1960s when he worked as a member of the Iron Workers Union.
The high rate of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illness in New York’s talc mining communities has long been noted by scientists. A 2002 British study cited Jefferson County, the location of Natural Bridge, as second highest in the U.S. for mesothelioma deaths in women and sixth highest for men.
The lawsuit filed by Lozo’s estate is seeking both compensatory and punitive damages.
