Firefighters Unaware of Exposure to Asbestos

New reports claim that firefighters in Everett, WA, may not have been alone when they were unknowingly exposed to asbestos during training.

Several other fire departments throughout Snohomish County are thought to have been put at risk as well during their training, which took place in old houses.

Asbestos Present in Houses

The firefighters that were trained at old houses in north Everett claim that they were unaware of the asbestos problem that was existent in the homes.

“Guys were being dragged on the floor and there was dust all over the place,” explains Troy Smith, union president for firefighters in Snohomish County, “that to me is inexcusable.”

The departments who were put at risk were apparently unaware of any problems and are still having issues getting the correct information they need and deserve from officials.

Asbestos Should Have Been Removed

Records claim that less than a week before the firefighters began their training in the homes, a construction company told the captain that asbestos and lead pain should be removed before the crews entered.

“The city is still trying to figure out why the firefighters were allowed to train in the houses before the asbestos was removed,” says Kate Reardon, a spokeswoman for the city.
