Firemen in MA Fear Asbestos Exposure

Firefighters at Fire Station 3 in Newton, MA have been waiting for nearly a week as city and state investigators work to determine whether they have been exposed to asbestos.

The city is reportedly waiting on results from a state test taken by the Division of Occupational Safety.

Potential Exposure at the Station

Contractors were reportedly performing renovation work at the fire station last week when debris from the ceiling fell on four of the firefighters.

Since city officials know that asbestos exists in the building, officials began a thorough investigation at the station.

“Our foremost concern is for the safety and health of building occupants,” explains mayoral spokesman Jeremy Solomon. “Clearly, before any work is done in the walls or ceilings in the future, better precautions need to be taken.”

Fire Union President Concerned

Fire Union President, Tom Lopez, says he’s not convinced that firefighters are safe from asbestos.

“I am very concerned with the health and safety of the firemen at these stations,” explains Lopez. “I guess it takes an accident for anyone to take action regarding such issues.”
