Attempt to Reduce Asbestos in Frankfort, N.Y., Continues

According to reports, the site where asbestos was found on Southside Road in Frankfort is reaching the end of its beginning stages of asbestos removal.

Although crews have been working since early this month to cover the soil and build a fence around the contaminated area, residents are still concerned of the potential for exposure.

Asbestos Revealed

The area that is contaminated is a 1.75-acre piece of land on Southside Road.

EPA public affairs specialist, Kristen Shopeck, reports that the asbestos was discovered when a couple from the state Department of Environmental Conservation was driving by and found that trucks were bringing in loads of debris onto the property.

Upon further testing, it was found that there was asbestos in the soil.

EPA Takes Action

The initial cleanup is reportedly a measure the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is performing to ensure that the asbestos doesn’t spread to surrounding areas.

The EPA claims that the type of asbestos that was found in Frankfort is friable, meaning that it can crumble and be reduced to powder with ease.

Researchers claim that friable asbestos can be easily released into the air, where it can remain for a long period of time and ultimately cause health problems.

Skopeck says that approval is needed for permanent removal to take place and this could take a long time.

However, she goes on to say, “we have legal proceedings against the responsible parties, and if they don’t take permanent action soon, then they will have to pay for the removal of the asbestos.”
