A Mesothelioma and Asbestos Information and Treatment Center Resource
According to reports, no one in Savannah, Georgia has been charged under the Asbestos Safety Act since 2005.
Many residents and officials are concerned about this new found statistic since it means that everyone in the state could be disobeying the law, but the State would never know since they no longer do regular inspections.
Savannah Resident Becomes Suspicious
Pat Strickland, who lives in Savannah, grew concerned about work that was being conducted along a street that was behind her home.
Strickland knew they didn’t have a permit and worried that their demolition project could be putting the community at risk.
“These people apparently started demolishing a building without a city permit,” explains Reporter Paul Rea, the Community Reporter.
No Asbestos Inspection Conducted
After being fined $200 for failing to have a work permit, crews began working at the site once again.
However, Strickland again expressed concern to the city regarding whether or not an asbestos inspection had been done.
An investigation found that Strickland’s concerns were valid, since no one from the government actually checks to make sure asbestos is properly removed from such sites.
“Anytime a citizen has concerns about city policy we take that very seriously,” said Susan Broker, City Citizen Office Director.
