A Mesothelioma and Asbestos Information and Treatment Center Resource
A woman living in Albany, NY, was recently fined by the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).
The agency alleges that the woman hired an unliscensed person to remove asbestos from her home.
Woman Pleads with Agency
Wanda Fay Scheler was reportedly fined $8,417 for permitting unlicensed workers to perform an asbestos abatement project at her house.
Although, Scheler filed an appeal in late January, it was supposedly denied.
Scheler claims that the project was supposed to just be painting, but the workers, without her authorization, pulled some shingles off the roof of her house.
DEQ Maintains Accusations
The DEQ claims that Scheler, who owns a rental property, hired the workers to perform a renovation project.
The workers supposedly removed several feet of siding that was then put into trash bags and disposed of in a nearby dumpster.
When the DEQ tested the siding they found it contained 10 percent chrysotile asbestos and the insulation supposedly contained 50 percent of the harmful substance.
