Hospital in Niagara Falls Fined

A medical center in Niagara Fall, NY, was recently fined for improperly removing asbestos.

The asbestos removal reportedly happened during a renovation project in December and will cost the center an estimated $110,000 in fines.

Memorial Medical Center to Pay

The Memorial Medical Center reportedly illegally removed asbestos from their property during their renovation project.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited the hospital for the lack of employee safeguards.

The center was also cited for improper asbestos removal and the failure to properly dispose of asbestos-containing material.

The OSHA inspection was reportedly prompted by an employee complaint.

At the inspection, OSHA officials reported that the asbestos was removed without the use of protective clothing, the area was not monitored for asbestos levels and the asbestos was not properly disposed of.

“There was a breakdown of essential precautions before, during and after this work, and the sizeable fines proposed her reflect the gravity of the hazard,” stated Arthur Dube, the area director for the OSHA.
