Howard County Approves Asbestos Abatement

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Commissioners from Howard County in Texas recently gave their approval to have a trio of buildings abated for asbestos.

The buildings are reportedly located on the future site of a jail.

High Costs of Project

The commissioners supposedly approved a $39,352 bid for asbestos abatement from Asbestos Removal Inc.

Combined with the fees for consulting, the total amount the county will be paying for the abatement alone will be $56,000.

A price that seems minuscule when compared with the total $11.57 million the county will spend on the jail and the complete project.

Ridding Buildings of Asbestos

Although the costs of the project will be expensive, the commissioners agree that in order to protect the community from being exposed to asbestos, it’s necessary to follow through with the abatement.

“I went in and looked at one of the buildings along with officials with the city and it’s in such bad condition, they decided to condemn it,” says architect Jeff Heffelfinger.
