Problems Containing Asbestos at Beck's Lodge

State officials in Illinois are demanding that Collinsville properly remove the asbestos that was left over from the demolition of Beck’s Lodge.

The 40-room motel was reportedly torn down on January 14, but the site, which contains asbestos material, has yet to be contained.

Asbestos Problems at Demolition Site

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reportedly complained to the Illinois Attorney General’s Office about the city’s failure to remove the asbestos from the site.

According to reports, the site contains more than 10,000 square feet of material with the hazardous substance asbestos.

Asbestos containing material had supposedly been sprayed on the ceilings of the 45-year old motel over the years.

City Asked to Fence Site

The IEPA has requested that the city fence off the perimeter of the property and continue to wet down the material until it is securely taken to a landfill to prevent residents from being exposed to the carcinogen.

Maggie Carson, a spokeswoman for the IEPA, says that the agency has improperly handled the asbestos removal.
