Removal of Asbestos Pile Begins in Iowa

A pile of asbestos-containing debris is reportedly being removed from a Livestock Exchange in Sioux City, IA.

Water was reportedly poured on the asbestos pile before the construction crew began removing the pile of hazardous material.

Asbestos Left by Contractor

The pile was left behind by a contractor who was hired to demolish the Livestock Exchange Building.
The City Council was given permission in December to contract a Michigan firm to remove the pile so exposure to the community would be prevented.

Asbestos was found in the pile, which was under a large tarp that was being held down by tires.

Debris Found Years After Demolition

In 2004 workers who were removing the footing from the building that had been demolished on the property in 1998, discovered the pile of asbestos-ridden debris.

Since this time, the pile has reportedly been fenced and covered and tests have confirmed that the debris contained asbestos.
