Mesothelioma: 12 Essential Facts

Iowa Residents Warned About Flood Asbestos

Residents living in Iowa are being warned to be cautious of asbestos as the flood waters throughout the state recede.

Clean up crews have already begun rebuilding the communities destroyed by the recent floods, and according to the Mesothelioma & Asbestos Awareness Center, many could be at risk for asbestos exposure.

EPA Takes Action

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reportedly been monitoring the air quality in different parts of Iowa City.

They have been present to confirm whether or not there are high, and potentially dangerous, levels of asbestos in the air.

The agency has set up monitoring systems at three locations as well, in an attempt to protect local residents from the hazardous material.

Dangers of Asbestos Exposure

Exposure to asbestos has been proven to cause long-term and fatal illnesses, such as mesothelioma.

When asbestos fibers are ingested or inhaled, they can settle in the lungs for up to 50 years with no evident symptoms known to victims.

However, once patients are diagnosed as having mesothelioma their lives are often suddenly cut short.

Warnings have been issued throughout the state informing citizens that anyone who removes asbestos from their homes or other buildings must follow state guidelines and regulations.
