Students at La Grange Middle School in New York were recently sent home early from school after asbestos was found on campus.
The asbestos was discovered, and possibly released, during the installment of electrical cables in the school’s cafeteria.
Forced School Closing due to Asbestos
While workers were installing electric cables for a smoke detector eight screws reportedly caused a wall perforation and students were immediately let out early.
Superintendent of Schools, Frank V. Pepe, Jr. claims that although there was no contact with any of the students, he was notified of the situation.
Air Tested
An independent lab was hired to test the air quality to determine potential hazards to students and employees.
The test reportedly revealed the presence of asbestos; however, officials claim the amount poses no real threat to those in the school on a daily basis.
A letter was reportedly sent out to all parents informing them of the situation and the school, which was built in 1966, re-opened.
School officials say they intend on keeping a close eye out for other signs of asbestos throughout the school in the future and get annual checks.
