Superintendants Take Action for School Safety

School officials from all over Maryland recently gathered in Annapolis to ask the state for new construction money.

According to reports, several schools throughout Maryland are in need of more funding to solve ongoing asbestos in school problems and prevent the children’s health from being at stake.

Improvements Needed at Middle School

Leaky windows, asbestos and outdated air conditioning units are just a few of the many problems at Severna Park Middle School.

“We have leaking roofs. All the windows have asbestos on them. We have some floors and ceilings that still have asbestos on them,” says Sharon Morell, the principal of the school.

These are less than ideal conditions for a 40-year-old school where more than 1, 400 students spend eight hours a day.

School Officials Determined to See Change

Money is still needed to start the renovation that is expected to cost $43 million.

“All children deserve the very safest, healthiest environment they can have so they can access learning,” says Morell.
